BACK UP YOUR DATA BEFORE TROPICAL STORMS MAKE LANDFALL
CBL Data Recovery Counsels Caribbean Computer Users onn How to Reduce Risk of Data Loss
CHRIST CHURCH, BARBADOS – August 17, 2007 – CBL Data Recovery Technologies Inc., a leading international provider of data recovery services, is warning businesses and individuals alike to take precautions to safeguard the data on their computers during these latest bouts of tropical storm activity.
“Back up your data on CDs, DVDs, or USB thumb drives,” advises Michelle Walker, General Manager of CBL’s Caribbean operations in Christ Church, Barbados. “Store them in a separate location or if you need to evacuate your home or office, these small devices can easily be taken with you.”
While personal safety should be everyone’s foremost concern, victims of data loss due to flood or other storm fallout, shouldn’t panic. Once businesses examine the damage caused by flooding, they may be facing a data loss due to water-damaged personal computers and servers.
CBL advises that computer users with water-damaged hard drives or removable storage media:
- Do not attempt to use or turn on the water-damaged hardware
- Do not open the water-damaged media
- Do not expose the water-damaged media to heat to dry it
- Do not place the water-logged media in a freezer
- Do not agitate the hardware in an attempt to rid it of water.
If data backups are kept on CDs or DVDs offsite, the risk of data loss is dramatically reduced. However, if business and individuals discover flood-damaged PCs and servers, they should not throw in the towel. When taking assessment of their losses, computer users should know data is very resilient and recoverable.
