On the 2nd of September 2007, the Mayor of San Francisco has proclaimed this to be the 40 year anniversary of not only one of the most important events in world music but also in the hearts and minds of an entire generation.
The 40th Anniversary Summer of Love Free Concert will take place in Golden Gate Park’s Speedway Meadows between 10 AM and 6 PM. Mayor Newsom acknowledged the 60's movement in his proclamation which begins: "Whereas, The Summer of Love in San Francisco is internationally recognized as the birthplace of the 60's revolution that ignited a spiritual awaking that swept the world".
It started with a simple four letter word – LOVE! In the 1960’s this word became synonymous with a generation and San Francisco. It was a concept, a belief deep in the hearts of all who were there (and those who wished they were). It began with the writers and artists such as Janis Joplin, Jack Kerouac, Jimi Hendrix and the "Beat Generation" and then one summer it happened! "We Were Everywhere.The pureness of thought exploded exponentially and there were now millions of us.''
This event, this historical moment, which included most of 1967, became known as the “SUMMER OF LOVE”. The word was brought fourth by musicians such as Donovan, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, the Grateful Dead, and Jefferson Airplane, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Jim Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all of which were present at this extraordinary event.Then carried on by many of the English musicians like Eric Clapton, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
For the 40th Anniversary, Eye Candy invites you to be part of the Love Generation! Eye Candy will be placing a 20 sq meter state of the art super screen next to the main stage where 100’s of musicians will perform. The tens of thousands in attendance will be entertained by the likes the Charlatans, the remainder members of the Doors, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks, Dakota Tribe, Artie Kornfeld (producer of Woodstock), the Grateful Dead, Jefferson starship, Jerry Miller Band and many many more. Eye Candy has the exclusive rights to a very limited amount of commercial airtime by invitation only.
