Can some Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers possibly be heroes in the Motor City? Absolutely!
It’s all because of 76er standout Willie Green. He was born in “Pistons country,” and in his love for the city he gives back with a low-cost basketball camp for inner city youngsters. “Willie Green’s Basketball Camp” happens August 6 -10 at Highland Park High School, 15900 Woodward Ave in Highland Park, MI. The camp is co-sponsored by the Master’s Commission, a non-profit affiliate of Greater Grace Temple.
For many youngsters from financially-
challenged families, attending a sports clinic with a pro player is just a dream. But the 76ers’ sharpshooter is making that dream come true for many inner city Detroit youngsters. He’s joined by 76er teammates Andre Iguodala and Kevin Ollie as well as the Cav’s Eric Snow and Ira Newble. The event consists of weeklong camp for youth 7-17 yrs of age from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. There will be a “nominal” registration fee of only $90.00, which includes a t-shirt and lunch.
Green was a star at Detroit’s Cooley High before going on to become an “explosive”
scorer with the University of Detroit Mercy and moving to the pro ranks with the Philadelphia 76ers. While he plays for the Sixers, his loyalty to his hometown remains intact. This is the 4th year for the clinic aimed at inspiring youth to score big in life by stressing the importance of education, and encouraging Detroit youth to strive for excellence in all they do at home, in school, and in the community.
The camp is just one part of “Operation Greenlight” which includes Willie Green’s Bowling For Scholars, and The Willie Green Celebrity Golf Outing at the New Rogell Golf Course. Proceeds from the latter events go to the Willie Green Foundation Scholarship Fund.
