Aug. 1, 2007 - PRLog -- I am 60yrs old and I have always enjoyed writing and have been inspired by many things. I have been writing since my teens when I found that writing silly rhymes for personalised greetings cards enabled me to make a little much needed cash to supplement my paltry wages. This is my first published work except for one gardening poem that was included in a compilation of poems in a book published by Anchor Books called "Joyful Harvest".
Much of my writing has been poetry - mostly amusing or nonsense rhymes. The inspiration for ‘The Why Series’ was the birth of my second grand daughter Lulah. The books are a special gift for her. I feel that kids need to be entertained. You only have to spend a few hours playing with a four year old to see how their world revolves around fantasy - turning the impossible into reality. A good story must have that thread of "believable" fantasy coupled with happiness and fun. That's the formula that I try to write to. I started life as a teacher in a primary school just outside Wolverhampton, the town I was born in. I love kids and, would be thrilled to be able to think that my writing was bringing fun and happiness into little people's lives.
When I have an idea for a story I just sit down and write it, usually very quickly. The Why Series poems normally take no more than a couple of hours to write but once the first draft is completed I then spend days or weeks changing a word here and a phrase there until I am satisfied with the work Even though these are children’s books I try to write them in a way that will make them enjoyable for "grown ups" to read to their children.
Strangely enough I don't read much myself. I do enjoy a good story. Authors like Stephen King, Ian Rankin, Dan Brown would be high on my list of favourites. As far as children’s authors are concerned Rohal Dahl obviously springs to mind as does Edward Lear.
I have been excited about the prospects of ‘The Why Series’ ever since Waterstones encouraged me to have my books published. Now that they are published I am even more excited about their future. I just want to put all my efforts into giving the series the best chance to succeed. I am very grateful to PSP for having the courage to take this project on. My excitement is now tinged with a little frustration and apprehension because I know my books will sell if I handle their marketing and promotion in the right ways but I feel the pressure of knowing that if the books fail it will be my fault.
Family and friends have been a constant support to me with ‘The Why Series’. They have all been aware of my silly poems for many years and have constantly tried to encourage me to write and be published. They love ‘The Why Series’ and bombard me with new titles to continue the series.
I run my own business writing and presenting quizzes for pubs, clubs, and companies. My business started 11 years ago when I decided that I needed a change from my lifelong involvement in sales and marketing. My plans for the immediate future are to expand ‘The Why Series’ and to try to make these books a big retail success. The next two stories are being illustrated and there are another two titles ready for illustration. Book number 10 is in draft form and I have another couple of ideas ready to write. If I can get the first 5 books selling strongly the rest should be a little easier.
About the book - The Why Series:
"THE WHY SERIES" was born from my grand daughter's incessant use of the word WHY. Like all kids she asks the question about anything and everything and demands suitable answers. When she asked one day "why don't animals talk like us Grampy" I made up a story to explain and my series of books began.

In "THE WHY SERIES" each little book is a poem of sixteen stanzas each with it's own illustration. In every book the poetry is written in exactly the same metre of verse. Titles include

The books have been used in local schools and nursery groups with very positive feedback.
