Aug. 1, 2007 - PRLog -- I am 38. I have always enjoyed writing, ever since I was a child. I did a degree in English and Drama, and literacy is my main teaching area at school. I started writing this book about five years ago, then it got put on a back burner as domestic life and work took over. I got my inspiration from work. I am a primary school teacher, and my school had just undergone an Ofsted inspection. I just started thinking, "What would happen if..." and it went on from there. Obviously none of the characters are real people! I just took some of the more obvious character traits of people I know or knew, whether at work, socially or just by reputation, then blew them up to unreal proportions. When I come up with an idea, I try to visualise it as if it is happening on a screen. Then I write down what I see and feel, as well as what I want other people to see and feel. Usually, I try to picture characters in a certain setting and think about how they react.
I have read all sorts of different authors, my favourites are Ian Rankin and Ruth Rendell. With Ian Rankin, I love the Scottish background and the plots, and I think Ruth Rendell's way of pulling you into the book is fascinating. Another favourite of mine is Daphne du Maurier.
Even though my book is published, the reality of this still feels quite unreal. I don't feel like a "published author" - but then I'm not sure what a "published author" is meant to feel like! Probably not as "lovely" as on some sad sitcoms! I do feel incredibly proud, and pleased that my husband persevered with sending my book out to publishers. It was actually him that contacted Pneuma Springs in the first place as I had got so disillusioned with the rejection letters.
I work part time as a primary teacher in a village school teaching years 5 and 6 (ages 9 - 11.) Also, I am a mum to 4 children, so that keeps me pretty busy! I find it very difficult juggling work, family and writing, and a lot of the proof reading for this book was done in the small hours.
A few of my friends and family have read the book and have said that they have seen a different side to me! My mum really enjoyed it, and even my husband (who rarely reads books that don't contain footballs or guitars) read it all. At present, I am not writing anything as I am really busy with reports, SATs marking, plus we have had Ofsted at school! I have got lots of ideas, but need a few extra hours in the day or days in the week.
My ultimate dream would be to write full time and give up teaching - I have done it for 15 years! More realistically, I'd love someone I don't know to read my book and say something nice about it. Who knows?
About the book - Mystery Deceit and a School Inspector:
"Was it murder or was it an accident? If it was murder, who was responsible? Whatever it was, what are they meant to do about it?" Beaver's Brook Primary School is the subject of a justifiably scathing ofsted inspection, which rips apart the school and its inhabitants, wrapping them in mystery and deceit. As an inspector is found dead in the staff room, the fragile lives of the teachers are held to scrutiny and ridicule. Their hopes and aspirations decompose beneath a tirade of no-holds-barred mockery, in which love, ambition, jealousy, passion, guilt and innocence collide with disastrous consequences.
