Made from non-biodegradable juice and sauce packs, the bright, eye-catching Rubbish Bags are the latest innovation in ‘green’ fashion. Each bag is unique and comes in either a close woven or stitched-together patchwork design. Any of the brightly coloured shoulder shopper bags, woven purses, woven wooden handle handbags and woven handbags available are the perfect fashion accessories for this summer’s women’s fashion.
Two hundred Filipino women decided to band together and formed a co-operative to clean up their neighbourhood from litter. Initially they merely collected rubbish themselves. As the concept developed, they installed big refuse bins at various local collection points such as schools, asking people to recycle their used packs. As a result they now collect 50,000 packs a day. The packs are then sorted, cleaned, sanitized, sewn together and transformed into the Green Fashion Rubbish Bags. Profits from the factory are divided between all the employees in the co-operative.
Four styles are now available in the Green Fashion range at dorothyperkins.com – a woven tote handbag (£15), a woven handbag with a wooden handle (£18), a small shoulder shopper bag made of stitched juice packs (£10) and a woven purse (£6). The handles are made from recycled or end of line material which would have otherwise been thrown out.
Only 200 pieces in total will be available from Dorothy Perkins at select London stores. Although these bags are also available from some small boutiques and independents, Dorothy Perkins has the highstreet exclusive on the Rubbish Bags.
