Northern Edge Algonquin offers what owner Todd Lucier refers to as "Adventure Retreats", for adults at Ontario's Algonquin Provincial Park. Sometimes, the vacation getaways are a little out of the ordinary, like The Art of Wilderness Survival ( http://www.northernedgealgonquin.com/
On this adventure retreat, guests learn how to start a fire with a bow drill, build a shelter, find food learning about wild edibles and prepare meals that adventure guide Alexis Burnett calls "Wilderness Gourmet".
Alexis says, "Athough we spend a great deal of time understanding the basics of Wilderness Survival, the long weekend retreat at Ontario's Algonquin Park is really about reconnecting with nature, taking the time to slow down and reflect on what's really important in our lives. Guests go away with an appreciation for stillness and see the world through eyes and indeed all the senses that are hungry for detail."
Lucier is quite excited to have Burnett and his co-facilitator Chris Mortimer deliver this Wilderness Survival Course at his nature retreat. "To get this level of training, many people travel around the world.... what we've got here is students of renowned teachers like Jon Young and Tom Brown who are offering this retreat on Toronto's doorsteps."
Indeed, the nature retreat is easy to get to, the folks at Northern Edge Algonquin even help guests arrange transit to the nature retreat by train (on Ontario Northland), or bus.
"The first time people rub sticks together and get a fire going with their bow drill, they say, 'I can do it a lot better than those people on Survivor. '" Indeed, there is a strong element of empowerment that is a part of the retreat. "Knowing that if they happen to get lost in the wilderness they will be able to take care of themselves, that's a good feeling."
The four day all-inclusive retreat costs just $497.
Lucier adds, "Although it's a wilderness survival course, guests need not endure harsh conditions. They sleep comfortably in cabins and dine on mostly organic fare, when they aren't harvesting wild edibles as part of the course."
The Edge provides a variety of unique experiences that introduce their guests to the richness of nature on the edge of Ontario's most renowned provincial park.
