The politics of peace in 1945 brought about almost immediate large-scale regeneration of British cities but for some central and eastern European countries the waiting took a little longer. The last Soviet soldiers only left Hungary in 1991 and it was only really EU membership in 2004 that created solid foundations for rapid growth coupled with stability.
