Child abuse! Please help us plug this gap..

The gap is all the children's agencies can only detect child abuse after the damage has been done. Grandparents because of their unique relationship with their grandchildren could intervene sooner if they had legal rights of contact.

Child abuse! Please help us plug this gap..

Apart from broken homes It is estimated that there are 160,000 drug and alcohol related homes that children live in. A full blown alcoholic or drug addict can be very devious and care little for the real welfare of children. In their desire to satisfy their habit they will readily use the children in blackmail to keep their supplies going. The one sided unfair family laws are on their side, a restraining order can be very easily obtained to ban anyone who is thought to be a threat to their exposure and if no one is allowed contact with the children abuse goes on unnoticed, until it really gets out of hand. Meanwhile the children can be going through hell all this time.

It is heartbreaking to see the adverts of children support agencies like NSPCC and Children 1st can only act after the abuse is obvious. They constantly highlight on TV that there is widespread child abuse then say they can only cope with half of them. Our laws do not allow grandparents the right of contact which could spot this abuse especially with the unique relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.   What happens to these children. Are they the forgotten ones who land up in hospital badly damaged for life, or worse?

Grandparents know their own sons and daughters and have an insight into how their children are being treated.  However, at present if grandparents report any concerns the parent(s) immediately shut them out and the law supports that, even when the child may be in more danger.  The children of broken homes and single parents are most vulnerable as the law allows the parent(s) to make themselves and the child an island, where no-one else can get access.

We need your help to protect these children. It is the responsibility of everyone (except the law it seems) to make sure children are given the right of protection by family members and that they are treated well.

Please post the request below to your member of parliament. If you don’t know who they are, phone up the number below for your country giving your postcode and they will tell you.

Dear

Please ask the government to give grandparents legal rights of contact with their grandchildren of a couple of hours a month or by agreement through mediation. And adopt ‘The Scottish Charter for Grandchildren’ (viewed at www.grandparentsapart.co.uk) Along with the right to send and receive e-mails, letters, phone calls, cards and presents on special occasions. This will provide a much needed outside line (NSPCC admits to being able to cope with only half the calls they receive) to someone that have a unique relationship with the children. Grandparents are very frustrated because the unfair family laws regard them as irrelevant persons in their grandchildren’s lives, thereby preventing them from being in a position to protect them especially those living in broken homes and drug alcohol danger homes.
