Dave Asbridge who organises the Crucial Crew project commented, “The education is about health and keeping safe and teaches children what to do in the event of an emergency. These messages are not only for the children as they take them home and pass them on to their families.”
Mrs Jones from Fairfield School added, “The pupils at Fairfield School had a really great time at Crucial Crew. They have learnt a lot as a result of the various activities laid on for them.”
The presentations are a mix of classroom based learning and informal interactive sessions, such as Cindarella-style pantomimes about safety in the home.
Representatives from the Isle of Man Emergency Services attempt to pass on information first hand as well as personnel from Isle of Man businesses like the Manx Electricity Authority and Manx Gas. Topics covered in the training include safety in the home, drugs and alcohol, smoking, coastal safety, first aid, road safety and fire safety.
Lynette Byrne, Head of Marketing at Bradford & Bingley International commented, “It is a privilege to sponsor such a worthwhile initiative. Crucial Crew really benefits the community and provides pupils with essential life skills. The children not only learn about the health and safety issues they are likely to face but also what to do in those circumstances.”
