July 16, 2007 - PRLog -- Unless you're signed up for the next "American Idol," it'll take more than talent to get you established in a music career. That's because there's more to the music industry than just rhyme and rhythm. Whether you're looking for a spot on-stage or in the recording booth, you'll need the proper career training and preparation in order to handle yourself in the field. The Musicians Institute (http://www.collegesurfing.com/ce/mi/) in Hollywood, CA offers just the skills you'll need.

Originally founded as the Guitar Institute of Technology in 1977, the Musicians Institute has grown well past the point of teaching guitar. Now serving as an alternative to traditional colleges and universities, the Musicians Institute offers the Certificate in Performance, Associate of Arts in Performance, and Bachelor of Music in Performance for various instruments -- such as keyboard and drums -- and vocal training. Depending on the program they choose, students can expect to be enrolled for either three months, 18 months, or four years.

That's not the only way in which the school has continued to develop and expand. As Steve Lunn, the director of admissions, states, the Musicians Institute is meant to "prepare musicians and music industry professionals for today's music industry." Although music programs and lessons can still be taken exclusively, students are offered the opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of the industry. With specialized certificate programs in audio engineering, music business, and film production (with emphasis on short films and music videos), students who are more interested in the production aspects of the industry can also benefit from attending the Musicians Institute.

To accommodate both musicians and aspiring music industry professionals, the Musicians Institute operates a multi-million dollar facility, complete with three radio-quality recording studios. The school also enjoys a high exposure to industry thanks to the professional musicians who often rent out the school's studios, and faculty members -- more than half of whom are currently working in the musical industry. Students are also emerged in the field early and often.

"Our main goal is to get students out there," says Lunn. "The Musicians Institute is proactive in finding opportunities for students... opportunities that more individuals don't have unless they know the right people." From requiring that students in the music business program complete an internship, to hosting professional auditions with top bands and musicians, the Musicians Institute aims to help students find their way into the right music career. Thanks to this, some graduates of the school have gone on to work for such companies as Sony Music and Capitol Records, while others have landed jobs with well-known musical artists like Pink, Christina Aguilera, and Nine Inch Nails.

If you're interested in joining the 1,300 expected students this fall, you'll need to submit an audition. But before you apply, consider where your talents stand. "The school is not set up for an absolute beginner," warns Lunn. "However, students who are self-taught can come into the school." According to him, while students interested in the three-month certificate programs can easily enter without such skills as sight-reading music, applicants to the bachelor's program should already know how to sight-read, and should have some kind of prior educational experience in the field. Considering that the acceptance rate into the bachelor's program is 50 percent, the more you know, the better your chance of admittance.
