St. Louis Mo. July 9th 2007: OCI announced today that it has released Version 1 of its open source CORBA® product, written entirely in Perl and known as opalORB. The product has been developed to support the users of large scale CORBA® systems, who need the kind of capabilities offered by Perl. Perl is one of the most widely used cross-platform scripting languages and is favored by systems administrators. Perl offers the means to easily and quickly develop scripts to interact with their diverse application base.
Dr Moshiri the CEO of OCI commented that for the last 8 years OCI had been extending its range of open source middleware solutions. “OpalORB continues that OCI commitment to providing cost effective mission critical infrastructure to our client base.”
About opalORB
The opalORB is an OMG CORBA 2.6 implementation written completely in Perl. Perl is a dynamic and portable language, which means the opalORB will run on any platform that supports Perl and TCP/IP sockets. The opalORB implements both the client and the server (POA) sides of the CORBA model.
The implementation follows the intent of the OMG’s “CORBA/e Micro Profile” recommended subset of the more usual ORB functionality. This ensures it is simple, small and easy to use. Additionally through its support of the CORBA::Any data type opalORB is able to interact with most other ORB services.
OpalORB implements the OMG specification IIOP™ and is therefore able to interoperate with other ORBs, even when written in other languages.
Initial Service Offerings
OCI will provide technical consulting support, software engineering services and bug fixes for opalORB under the same terms as its other distributions of open source products. The opalORB software, and patches, will be freely downloadable. New versions of this commercially supported open source CORBA implementation will be made available at reasonable intervals so that development organizations can lock into a predictable release and support model.
