Strike A 'dynamic' Rather Than 'heroic' Posture For Better Office Health

Technology has improved efficiency in the office, but we have become increasingly static as more functions are achieved without leaving the desk. Being able to increase output may impress the boss but not if it's at a cost to health.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Jul 02, 2007 – Chris Riley at workplace furniture manufacturer, Verco says:

Remaining in one position for long periods of time is not good for anyone.  Our bodies are designed to move - static sitting damages health.

Dynamic movement promotes the exchange of fluids around each inter vertebral disc, the transfer of blood through capillaries, and the exchange of oxygen to muscles.  All of these factors enable the body to avoid fatigue for longer periods of time, and promote and maintain good health and efficiency.
Dynamic support can be provided by an under seat tilting mechanism that allows the seat and back of an ofice chair to adjust according to the continual movement of the user.  For more sophisticated chairs, a synchronised chair seat and back mechanism may allow a certain freedom of movement, so that a dynamic posture can be adopted, while still maintaining active support for the body.

Poor posture also has a negative effect on an individual's health and overall efficiency levels.  In an standing position the human body adopts a lazy ‘S’ shape to the spine, and it is this ideal that we try to maintain when sitting.

Unfortunately too often when the an individual adopts a sitting position this action is often accompanied by a backward rotation of the pelvis. This rotation creates a ‘lazy C’ curve of the spine and the well known slouched sitting position.

The more hunched you are, the greater the pressure on the spinal column and the more work the trunk, neck and shoulder muscular systems have to do to maintain the posture. The body becomes fatigued earlier - inefficiency, tiredness and ill health creep in.

If we can control the backward tilt of the pelvis, the spine will retain the ‘lazy S’ curve and the body will, as a result, be more in balance with itself.  This reduces strain on the spinal structural muscles and the body, using less energy to retain the seated position and enabling us to stay in one position for longer periods of time without becoming tired.
