July 2nd, 2007, Los Angeles California – “Freedom requires nothing less than the courage to confront fear, danger, intimidation and even death without hesitation…” These are the words that begin Decreta Libertatis, The Principles of Freedom.
“I am thunderstruck with patriotism!” says Mark Sampson, resident of Los Angeles California, Son of the American Revolution and descendent of Deborah Sampson Gannett, distinguished female soldier of the American Revolution who disguised her gender and enlisted in the Continental Army as a man. “I grew up listening to my grandfather tell stories of Deborah, of the Revolution and of the great sacrifices our founding fathers, sons and daughters had to make to secure our independence. I wanted to capture the enduring spirit and conviction of their work in The Principles of Freedom.”
When asked why he wrote The Principles of Freedom, Mark says, “I believe the underlying dreams, determination and sense of duty our founders infused into Independence Day can become dulled and quickly diluted when competing with the fanfare of a modern holiday. I wanted to create a re-energized, impassioned declaration to freedom, capturing the essence of what I believe our American history has shown us to be both the personal and political characteristics required to live as free people.”
Mark goes on to say “It breaks my heart when I see news headlines and reports showing the world’s opinion of America deteriorating and becoming tarnished in recent years. I still believe that America is a shining beacon of liberty, I believe the dedication and courage of our founders can still be a positive role model for people living around the world today, and I hope The Principles of Freedom can serve as an inspiration to those who are free and those fighting for their freedom alike.
