June 20, 2007 - PRLog -- Traveling with your dog is one of the most rewarding experiences that a pet guardian can have. By taking very little effort, you can make a checklist of things to accomplish before leaving for your destination.

No matter the length of your trip, you should always keep in mind the safety and comfort of your child with fur. Here are a few reminders to make your trip a success:

Check ahead for doggie daycare and pet sitters before you travel so when taking in an excursion or activity that does not include Fido, you will be prepared. Always bring his health records as daycare providers will not accept him without proof that his vaccinations are up to date.

When traveling by car with pets in extremely hot weather, you will want to make sure the air conditioning functions properly before you hit the road. Water is always a necessity no matter the weather condition so make sure you have plenty on hand for both you and Fido.

Always use a safety restraint or tethered kennel. Never let Fido ride in the back of an open-air truck. In the event of an accident, your dog can be a projectile inside the vehicle and thrown from the bed of a pick-up truck.

As far as feeding your pet, you might want to curb the usual amount so as not to create too many pit stops. If you and your pet are the active sort, bring plenty of towels. You can wipe your feet at the door, but Fido needs your assistance to get the mud and gunk off his paws.

Remember your pet first aid kit. There are many great ones on the market and with very little effort, you can build your own.

Once you arrive at your Fido-friendly destination, take the time for your puppy to familiarize himself with his new surroundings. Place his water and feeding dish in the spot you want him to use during your stay. If you know your dog will jump on the furniture in your new digs, bring extra sheets to protect beds and couches.

If traveling by air this summer be sure to check with your airline for pet policy and safety requirements. Most airlines are limited to the number of pets allowed in cabin and those being transported as cargo.

And finally, bring the usual from home; lots of toys, treats, water, food, dog bed or blanket. Strange surroundings can be daunting for many pets but by taking these few precautions, you and your dog will be sure to enjoy a memorable vacation.
