“Our customers are amazed with the amount of time that is actually saved by using the Flow Racks, “ said Joe Schodowski, president of Shelving, Inc. Because one carton of each line item is located on the pick face means that a large number of SKU's are presented to the picker over a small area. Walking time is drastically reduced, which in turn increases efficiency in the operation and provides significant labor savings. “Transitioning from static storage to carton flow racks should be a top priority for warehouse managers. Static storage is inefficient and labor intensive, typically requiring 2 to 4 times more pickers, and twice the floor space than flow rack systems. This can cause inventory control, stock rotation and picking accuracy problems,” said Schodowski.
A Carton Flow Rack is similar to a conveyor within a rack structure--loads are generally deposited on one side and flow gently to the other. Carton Flow Racks may be many units deep where the carton at the front is going to be picked from and the cartons behind are reserve storage. By achieving high-density, dynamic storage, Carton Flow Racks offer excellent payback while also keeping pickers at a safe distance from the forklifts that are replenishing the racks.
