Managing the Media, 3rd edition is the world’s first multi-media e-book dealing with handling Western media. Author and media training expert, Graham Kelly, says the 200-A4 page+ work contains numerous video, audio, print and internet examples and is a must-read for anyone who deals with or plans to deal with Western journalists.
“I’ve trained globally and nowhere is the experience of dealing with the Western media potentially more frightening than in my own backyard, Asia. Cultural differences mean many non-western people find it hard to stand up for themselves when facing Western journalists and crews, yet stand up for themselves they must.”
A recent media training assignment in Asia alerted Graham Kelly to the need for his e-book.
“The gentle nature and cultural upbringing of these particular Asian people mean that they’re not naturally suited to standing up to intrusive questioning by Western journalists. I heard of one example while there that involved a Western TV news crew trying to link militarism to this Western mining company. They hounded this particular manager, initially accusing her company of being in cahoots with communist rebels who were some 500 kilometres away.
They kept asking if the company talked to the rebels; Would it talk to the rebels? Is it possible it would talk to the rebels? Finally, mainly for peace, she gave in and agreed with the journalist that it was possible her company could talk to the rebels, even though that particular admission was wrong and detrimental to her company.”
Graham said that had she read his book she would have known not to give in like that.
This is the 3rd edition of a reference work that started in 1990 but this is the first multi-media e-book version of the work.
“I wrote and published the 2nd edition in 1995 when the internet was really just starting up. Now, the ability to write an e-book means I can give my readers a much richer learning experience. They have a lot of video, audio, print and internet site examples to highlight the key training points”, said Graham.
“We always tell our workshop participants (and the readers of this book) that not all journalists are out to trap them but some are. This really is a terror-reduction manual for business and community leaders who are absolutely scared stiff of dealing with the media in case they run into those few who are out to get them”, Graham said.
