They only played together for less than three years. They only had one studio album and four singles. They never won any award, but they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. They called themselves Sex Pistols and BBC describes them as "the definitive English punk rock band".
Amidst the prevalence of progressive rock and pop during the mid-70s, the movement that we now know as punk grew to give the music industry a fight. In the United Kingdom, a young band captivated audiences more for their spunk and controversial lifestyle than anything or anyone else. They epitomized what being punk was all about.
Thirty years after, a new generation is learning to appreciate the indescribable experience that is Sex Pistols. This wave is not only caused by the re-issue of their album “Never Mind the Bullocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols” but also through “Nana”, an endearing tale weaved by Japanese Ai Yazawa.
The Sex Pistols were cited a number of times in “Nana”, while the character Ren Honjo was modeled after Sid Vicious as a bassist, his style, even his chain and padlock necklace as well as his relationship with Nancy. Top fashion designer Vivienne Westwood was also cited throughout the story; her designer clothes used as Nana Oosaki's outfit and her trademark logo used in the art in different ways. Vivenne is linked with the Sex Pistols via Malcolm McLaren and their SEX/Seditionaries boutique on King's Road, in London during the 1970s.
“Nana” has influenced a new generation of punks – a generation who will go against the barriers of age, language and race to come together in a worldwide celebration to pay homage to Ai Yazawa’s creation. With nana being the Japanese word for seven, fans have designated 07/07/07 as the International NANA Day.
