Imagine being able to enjoy fresh strawberries in winter! Growing plants without relying on soil, at any time of the year really is possible and is known as the science of ‘hydroponics’
Hydroponics remove the need for soil when growing plants. Hydroponic mineral solutions were developed scientifically during the 1800s by the German botanists Julius von Sachs and Wilhelm Knop. Since then, the process has been adapted for large scale use in the agricultural industry. “Hydroponics is often used by teachers as a particularly good way of studying plant growth because the roots can be seen easily in most hydroponic systems,” explained Steven Parker, director of Great Stuff Hydroponics. “For this reason, growing plants using hydroponic methods can be fascinating for the hobbyist, with the added advantage that it is possible to grow your favourite plants, flowers or vegetables out of season.”

Although hydroponics is a great remedy for problematic growing conditions, other factors also play their part.
Steven Parker, director of Great Stuff Hydroponics, said: “It seems like very basic advice but making sure that plants are grown at the correct temperature and that they have good access to sunlight is vital for healthy growth. It’s surprising how often we hear from clients who have failed to follow these guidelines and are feeling frustrated by their efforts as a result!”
In areas where sunlight is poor, or if you are trying to grow a plant out of season, it may be best to invest in high wattage hydroponic lighting as a substitute for bright sunlight. Steven adds, “It is a common misconception that plants grown hydroponically can be placed closer together than plants grown in soil. In fact, they need to be permitted to grow in a well-spaced environment. This allows the plant to gain maximum access to the light it requires.”
