Executive Summary
The UK office furniture market advanced slightly in 2006, reaching £685m, a 2.2% increase on the 2005 level. In real terms sales of office furniture have declined by around 30% since 2000, although they showed consistent growth in the 1993-98 period.
If one includes sales of home office furniture supplied through domestic furniture channels the total market for office furniture reached £811m in 2006, compared to £792m in 2005.
Sales of workstations, desks and tables reached £305m in 2006, compared to £295m in 2005. This product group currently accounts for 45% of the market in value terms, compared to 42% of the market in 1990.
The market value of seating products stood at £195m in 2006, up from £187m in 2005. The market share of this product group is currently 28%, compared to 24% in 1990. Almost three-quarter in value terms refers to adjustable seating, with non-adjustable seating taking up for the rest.
Sales of office storage equipment totaled £135m in 2006, compared to £136m in 2005. In 1990 it claimed a market share of 25% but only 20% at the present time.
Almost two-thirds of office furniture sold is wooden products, and their popularity has been on the increase recently. In particular, wooden products dominate the workstations, desks and tables sector, whilst metal products have a significant share of the storage sector.
Dealers/contractors are the major distributors of office furniture, accounting for 51% of the market in value terms, whilst direct sales to end users account for a further 27%. Within the dealer/contractor sector it is estimated that 7% of sales are through tied or exclusive dealers.
Imports of office furniture reached £210.4m in 2006, compared to £204.9m in 2005, with the EEC supplying more than half of total imports. Imports currently account for 31% of the office furniture market in value terms, compared to 27% in 2000. However, if one includes all home office furniture, the import penetration is reduced to 27% for 2006.
Sales of office furniture are expected to reach £700m in 2007 and £712m in 2008, compared to the level of £685m reached in 2006. It is estimated that sales of workstations, desks and tables will reach £314m in 2007 and £320m in 2008, accounting for 45% of the total market in value terms. Sales of seating products may reach £203m in 2007 and £210m in 2008, whilst sales of all storage products are forecast to reach £135m in 2007 and £134m in 2008.
