UK Market for Kitchen Furniture
This report of the UK Kitchen Furniture and Kitchen Cabinet Market by Business & Research Associates provides a collection of statistical data and forecasts on the kitchen furniture industry in Britain. It contains information on the value of manufacturers' deliveries for all sectors of this market. The report also covers distribution channels, advertising and trade exhibitions. Major important manufacturers are profiled.
After the poor performance of the domestic furniture industry in 1999, both manufacturers and retailers were hoping for positive results in 2000. In fact, quarterly sales were ahead throughout 2000 on a year on year basis, although the quarterly data showed a gradual slowing in growth throughout the year. Sales followed a similar pattern in 2001, with sales growth being achieved in each quarter and an overall increase in sales of around £260m (at MSP), compared with a £160m increase in 2000. The research findings suggest that total sales increased by almost 5% (or £210m) in 2002, with producer prices being fairly static or even declining within certain sectors, whilst sales in 2003 are estimated to have grown by 4.1% (or £190m in value terms). The latest findings indicate that sales increased by about 3.0% in 2004, before declining by 2.6% in 2005, the first fall in the market for many years.
As far as kitchen furniture is concerned there have been modest increases in both volume and value terms in the period since 1999, even increasing sales in 2005 against the trend for domestic furniture generally. Nevertheless, competition has remained fierce throughout the industry, and several smaller companies have also gone into receivership.
Total sales of domestic furniture reached over £4860m in 2005, compared to £4995m in 2004 and £4850m in 2003. Total industry sales declined by 2.6% in 2005, with producer prices increasing by around 1-2% during the year. Total sales of kitchen furniture reached £1100m in 2005, compared to £1070m in 2004 and £1040m in 2003; this product group currently accounts for 23% of the total domestic furniture market.
In volume terms the total number of fitted kitchen furniture installations has increased slowly in recent years, reaching over 1,020,000 units in 2005, compared to 974,000 units in 2004 and 938,000 units in 2003. Sales of built-in units, mainly base and sink units, moved from £505m in 2003 to £530m in 2005, whilst sales of storage furniture, mainly wall units increased from £450m to £480m in the same period.
Kitchen specialists account for 18% of the total market in volume terms, but 41% of the market in value terms, with independent specialists claiming 13% in volume terms and 34% in value terms. Multiple cash/carry furniture warehouses have 34% of kitchen installations, but 23% in value terms, whilst the direct contract sector accounts for 18% of volume sales and 13% of sales value. DIY outlets account for over 20% of sales volume, but 14% of sales value. The leading kitchen furniture retailers are MFI (including Howden), B & Q and Magnet, although Ikea is now a major threat in this sector.
The private sector of the market accounts for the majority of sales of kitchen furniture with 93% of the total market in volume terms. Existing dwellings in the private sector continue to provide the main source of demand with 74% of the total market, with the new build sector accounting for 19% of the total.
Imports of kitchen furniture totaled £81m in 2005, compared to £77.4m in 2004 and £78.2m in 2003. The penetration rate for such products within the UK market is currently almost 7.5% in value terms. Alno (UK) Ltd dominates this sector of the market.
Total sales of kitchen furniture are expected to reach £1140m in 2006 and £1190m in 2007, compared to the level of £1100m achieved in 2005. This product group will account for around 23% of the total domestic furniture market in value terms during the period under review. Total kitchen furniture installations are expected to rise in 2006 and 2007, compared with the level of 1,023,000 units achieved in 2005.
