People hoping to enjoy a quiet motoring getaway in their caravans this year could be in for a shock as new statistics from Zurich Finance reveal that UK caravanners spend up to two weeks of the season stuck in traffic jams.
Bank holidays are the worst times to attempt a caravan trip, with around 76% of motorists complaining that they had been caught in queues. A staggering 11% claim that the jams had lasted for six hours or more.
One in five drivers find driving on the nation’s motorways most frustrating, with the M1 and M25 named as the country’s worst motorways due to the jams which build up on them. However, half of all drivers consider that local and city roads present the biggest challenge, saying that this is where they are most likely to be caught in frustrating traffic queues.
This is not just a problem for town planners; long queues result in boredom and impatience amongst drivers. Richard Burgess, director of Cover 4 Caravans cites some disturbing statistics, saying, “Studies show 12% of people admit attempting a risky manoeuvre in order to try to escape the jams and a surprising one in twenty admit to having driven on the hard shoulder to do so.”
Faced with queued traffic, caravanners are a particularly calm group of people. Richard Burgess says “Caravanners are a creative lot with singing and daydreaming being named as top ways to beat the boredom! However, I would advise caravanners not to become complacent in bad traffic due to the number of irresponsible motorists on the roads.
