Tool to automatically shutdown, log off, lock down PC and to keep it locked

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PR Log (Press Release)May 19, 2007 – Are you getting tired of asking your kids to shut off the computer (http://www.yoursafetyguide.com/ezoff.aspx)? If you’re like most parents, your children tell you they’ll turn the computer off right away but 5, 10, even 20 minutes later, guess what? The computer has not been shut off! No matter how much eye rolling your children do when you tell them to shut down the computer don’t stop making this demand. It’s important to restrict the amount of time children spend on the computer and here’s why.

Limiting computer access can improve health

There’s no arguing that children are less active than they used to be. Television, video games and computers, while entertaining, encourage a sedentary lifestyle. When children don’t get enough regular physical activity, the result is often weight gain. When weight gain becomes excessive, there’s an increased risk for problems such as diabetes and heart disease to develop, even in children. It’s up to parents to take control of this situation. One way is by limiting computer access or better yet, completely shutting off the computer.

Limiting computer access can also reduce the risks associated with Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). Few children have at home or at school a workstation that is ergonomically correct. Therefore, the less time they spend at the computer the better because poor posture and the constant demands on the hands can, over time, lead to RSI. Limiting computer access can also help reduce eye strain, another reason it’s important to turn off the PC.

Computer access restrictions help improve other skills

When a child spends too much time in front of the computer, social skills can decline. One could argue that being online promotes sociability, especially when instant messaging and participating in chat rooms. While there might be some truth to this, face-to-face socialization isn’t taking place and that could cause problems for the child. Unless the child regularly visits educational websites, it’s possible that core skills such as reading and writing might suffer, too. By limiting computer access, children will look for other activities to fill their time. For example, some might turn to books instead of computer games. They might even give more attention to their homework!

Limiting PC access can keep children safe

If children are looking for trouble, they’re going to find it no matter what anyone tries to do. But considering the number of dangerous situations that exist on the Internet, it makes sense that the more you limit your child’s computer access, the more you can limit their access to and involvement in such dangerous situations. If you’re unsure about this one, turn off the PC and see what happens.

Today, computers are a fact of life and children of all ages enjoy using them. Just remember that, like other “good” things in life, moderation is key. So don’t be afraid to turn the computer off when you feel it’s time. It’ll be hard because kids hate being told to stop. They’ll beg and plead with you but remember – you’re the boss. You control PC access, not them!
