PRLog (Press Release) –
May 15, 2007 – Violent attacks on Fretilin members around the country have been reported by the Secretary-General of the party, the former Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri, following the party’s crushing defeat in the recent presidential election.
According to a Fretilin press release today, the homes of Fretilin members have been burnt down and there have been assaults against party militants in 4 Districts.
Mr. Alkatiri called on the United Nations police to investigate the attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice.
"Our members and supporters continue to be the victims of violence," said Mr. Alkatiri. "Why is it that the UN Police and the International Stabilisation Force are unable to provide security?"
The attacks are said to be designed to intimidate Fretilin supporters in the lead up to parliamentary elections which will be held on 30 June 2007.
