May 11, 2007 - PRLog -- Boulder, Colorado, May 10, 2007 – Heritage Conservation Network and the Virginia City Institute for Preservation Research and Technology are offering a one-week investigative course on historic architectural finishes July 9-13, 2007 in Virginia City, Montana. The hands-on workshop will utilize a number of the town’s historic buildings as the laboratory for exploring the properties and characteristics of historic interior and exterior finish materials.

Virginia City has some outstanding examples of high style finishes rarely seen among the typically hastily built structures of western mining towns. Topics to be covered include lime-based coatings, paints, varnishes and decorative treatments. Basic field analysis, encapsulation, exposure and documentation methodology will also be covered. Instruction on proper preparation and finishing techniques will enable participants to engage various media and develop an understanding of materials and techniques. Jeff MacDonald, head of the Institute, will lead the workshop. The workshop is open to anyone interested in historic interior and exterior finish materials. The fee for the workshop is $425, which includes instruction, materials and insurance. Lodging and transportation to Virginia City are not included.

Complete workshop details and online registration are available from HCN’s website at http://www.heritageconservation.net. HCN offers a variety of opportunities to gain hands-on building conservation experience while contributing to the preservation of historic sites; see their website for more information on 2007 and 2008 workshops or contact them at +1 303 444 0128
