May 08, 2007 – The world's premier student technology competition, the Imagine Cup is one way Microsoft is encouraging young people to apply their imagination, their passion, and their creativity to imagining technology innovations that can make a difference in the world today.
The theme for this year is ‘Imagine a world where Technology enables better education for all’. The Imagine Cup began in 2003, and has traveled the world from Spain, to Brazil, to Japan, to India and this year to Seoul South Korea. Over 12,000 students from over 1,000 colleges across India participated in this contest. At the final round held at New Delhi on 04 May 2007, in a nail biting finish, the BITS Pilani Goa Campus team GRAS (Gaurav, Roshan, Abhishek, Subham) came second with their Grid Computing based model and won the prize money of Rs 75,000/- along with offer of Internship at Microsoft as well as join Microsoft’s coveted Innovation Centre. The team got their inspiration from the Pilani campus Project Grid-One spear headed by Dr Rahul Banerjee, Chief of Software Development and Educational Technology Unit and the lush green lawns in the picture some Goa campus must have prompted them to opt for the name GRAS. In the Imagine Cup 2005, Ishan Shukla and Mayur Karthik, BITSians from Pilani campus got the Second Position and award of $4000. Winning in tough challenging situations is indeed a way of life for students of BITS Pilani whichever campus they come from. Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani is a Leading University in India today offering degrees in Engineering, Management, Pharmacy, Sciences, Engineering Technology, Information Systems, General Studies, Finance, etc presently at Pilani, Dubai, Goa campuses and in the near future at Hyderabad campus. BITS Pilani also offers an array of work integrated learning programmes for HRD of a vast spectrum of Indian corporates.
