By: Scott Kastner/www.SurvivalKitsOnline.com But as time goes by it seems that Americans become complacent. Statistics show that 27-42% of this group is prepared. It is now recommended that we prepare to be on our own for seven days as opposed to the 72 hours first recommended by the Red Cross, FEMA and other governmental and non-profit agencies. The recommendations have been increased due to the slow response of local, state and federal agencies and the probability of a major event in the near future. Another thing that has factored in to the mix is the delay in FEMA’s national hurricane contingency plan. It is as if we are all waiting for the other shoe to drop. Many people are very afraid of the inevitable, we know that disaster will impact our lives negatively but preparing for disaster is low on the list of priorities How is it possible that so many people aren’t prepared? Well let us look at it this way, some of us know that tax day is April 15th every year but we wait until the last few days or hours to get our returns in. How many of us have plans for our funeral, burial or cremation? Many people do not have wills, perform preventative maintenance on our cars and there are even people still in this day and age that do not have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in their homes. What is it going to take? The CDC predicts a flu pandemic sometime in the future, earthquakes are common throughout the Pacific Rim, increased category 4 and 5 hurricanes are predicted, and nobody wants to say it but what about another terrorist attack? Yes it is scary but action decreases fear. Knowledge empowers. Thankfully, there are groups motivating and encouraging people to get on the emergency disaster preparedness bandwagon. Neighborhood watch groups, faith based groups, Parents Teachers Associations and homeowners associations just to name a few are passing out information, getting the word out and trying to help each other get prepared. Unfortunately, this is only a small section of the population. My wish would be that everyone does one thing every month to prepare. Start by making a plan with your family and friends today.
