Every year, marking the anniversary of the 1937 Texas School Explosion, and in anticipation of Healthy Schools Day, I salute "Healthy Kids Healthy Schools Heroes" to call attention to inspirational people working to protect children from school hazards and unhealthy school conditions. These champions of school safety and security are part of the "Lessons of the 1937 School Explosion" campaign to raise awareness of the urgent need for responsible leadership to eliminate hazards in today’s schools. On May 1st, MassCOSH and the Boston Urban Asthma Coalition will host a press conference at a school in Boston with the Mayor’s office on positive initiatives to improve environmental conditions, health, and learning in the Boston Public Schools (BPS). The event will take place at a school with an organized Environmental Committee which conducted a survey of school conditions that could impact children with asthma. Working with a City-wide Healthy Schools Taskforce, advocates will recognize positive efforts such as implementation of the BPS green cleaners policy for all 138 schools and efforts to improve maintenance of schools with high percentages of leaks and pests. www.masscosh.org/
