Imperato on Myspace, Mark Burnett, and the "original" reality TV show "Independent"

New York – April 27, 2007 – The recent announcement by Mark Burnett and Myspace about their new original reality TV series titled "Independent", seemed vaguely familiar to the writers at i1connect.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) - Apr 27, 2007 -
After initial research we found that 8 months ago, the Imperiali Organization had announced that they had copyrighted a new TV reality show regarding an independent candidate by the name of Daniel Imperato. (http://television.press-world.com/v/71025/imperiali-organization-announces-new-tv-project-your-next-prez.html )

One month later, the Imperiali Organization released a new spin on their reality TV show contest by making a TV reality show that was a competition between college-age students who are running campaigns and coming up with policy and political solutions for "America's Next President", the shows title. ( http://openpr.com/news/11451/Imperiali-Organization-Announces-America-s-Next-President-with-Daniel-Imperato.html ).  The show featured America's Leading Independent Presidential Candidate, Daniel Imperato.

The goal of "America's Next President" was to involve college-age Americans in the political process where they would be able to interact with their fellow classmates online, live via satellite, and in person.
Mark Burnett, the producer who popularized reality television, and Internet social network MySpace will unveil a new reality TV and Internet series that aims to groom one young politician or community leader to represent young America.
To do this, "Independent" will let viewers decide the fate of contestants who submit audition videos on MySpace, a community site.
Interestingly enough, Daniel Imperato had built his own independent community/voter registration site www.independentsus.com almost 5 months ago to use in conjunction with the TV reality show.
Because of the similarities, i1connect News contacted Daniel Imperato for his input on the newest reality TV show.
Imperato told i1connect that the Imperiali Organization's associates Steve Xirinachs of San Diego, and Julio Herzer out of Beverly Hills, were jointly working on the marketing of the reality TV show.

Xirinachs reported that he had meetings with FOX, NBC, CBS, and Dick Clark Productions, and suggested that the shows revenues could reach in excess of $50-100mm.  He also suggested that the networks were interested in purchasing the show from Imperato and the Imperiali Organization.
Imperato said that he reached out for FOX, CBS, and NBC, and is still awaiting return calls and meeting dates pertaining to America's Next President, his reality TV show about an independent candidate and America's young people.

i1connnect learned that Imperato's  reality TV show was registered with the copyright office as of August 2006 and has a very similar concept to what MySpace, owned by News Corp., is calling an original program.

Imperato said that while he holds Rupert Murdoch and his son in high regards, he hopes to settle this mutually without any legal action.

He also added, "We have worked hard on the show, our independent community and voter registration site, and have rolled out the program on our own search engine www.i1search.com.  We are preparing the initial videos to be placed on our search engine as the beginnings of the reality TV show."

Imperato also said that last winter in New York, he met with Tom Ennis, producer of 19 Entertainment's #1 hit reality TV show, American Idol.  Imperato subsequently sent an NDA to Ennis and never received it back.

However Imperato felt that regardless of another show that is based off his concept, he feels that America's Next President can compete.

"This project is a great one.  If they (Myspace (News Corp.), Mark Burnett Productions) want to work with us fine, if not we will launch a competing project and see where it takes us both."

In the mean time, Imperato said that he will be contacting his entertainment counsel in Los Angeles to look into the possibilities of a deal that could be struck between all parties.

Subsequently, i1connect learned that Imperato called Mark Burnett's office personally and spoke to a gentleman by the name of Alan, who identified himself as one of Mr. Burnett's assistants.  Alan was impolite, curt, and told Imperato that they were working on this project over two years ago, as his rudely hung up the phone.

As of July 2005, News Corp. acquired Intermix Media, the owners of MySpace, for $580 million in cash.  As of last November, Rupert Murdoch reported that MySpace is now worth an estimated $6 billion, 10x the amount he originally paid for it.
Imperato still feels that an amicable partnership can be made between News Corp., Burnett, and himself.
