Jack McConnell talked about how much he saw the worth of grandparents promising, granny grants, The Charter for Grandchildren, which was supposed to alert people working for the welfare of children to take more consideration of the role grandparent’
Now read the story below, it will show you how much good all his talking has meant.
A phone call recently (in the past 6 weeks) to say the social services had adopted a grandmothers 4 year old grandson without letting her or her daughter (the child's mother) know anything about it. She was phoning the social worker to check that her meeting with her grandson the next day was still on when she was told the terrible news.
The heartbroken granny said "I knew something was wrong when i got put through right away and didn't get the usual rubbish, she is not at her desk, or she is not in. I was so shocked at her attitude when she said, “Have you not heard the adoption went through 3 weeks ago”. I asked her if I was ever to see him again, the answer was, “what do you think? then “I don't think so!, he is adopted you know" She was told it is nothing to do with them as he is no longer a child in care.
The granny had just received a letter from the sheriff clerk to tell her she would be getting a court date soon for a hearing to continue her contact with the boy. Even the sheriff court had no idea this had happened and her own solicitor is totally shocked.
This is adoption without consent is a terrible horrible thing to happen to this wee boy who loved his granny's visits and was looking forward to home visits with her. His young life has just been cut off from the person who really loved him. The granny believes this was because she could not take him to live with her as she has a job and mortgage to pay and the social services would not assist her if she gave up work. The granny was willing to take all the children, if only she had been given the granny grant to keep a decent home for the kids. The grandson has two brothers that he will not see either, one older that does live with the granny and one younger that the granny has never seen or been allowed contact with.
When it comes down to it, all political parties promise this and that to acquire votes but when they are in power they fail to keep these promises to grandparents and older people. We need to vote for a party that is mainly for our interests. A party that is promising to change the unfair family laws to give fair and equal contact with their grandparents and families which is denied at present.
This party is called The Scottish Senior Citizens Unity Party (SSCUP) the party for grandparents, pensioners and older people.
