The market for weaving machinery was slow in 2004. Deliveries of shuttleless looms, the more advanced weaving technology, grew by 4.6%. But shuttle loom shipments fell by almost 18% as only three countries ordered machines.
In the spinning sector, sales either declined or were fairly static. Deliveries of short staple ring spindles rose by only 0.2%, following a colossal 129% increase in 2003. Shipments of long staple spindles fell at a double-digit rate for the third successive year. Deliveries of open end rotors—which are based on a newer technology—fell by 19.8%.
