Oklahoma Holds $175 MILLION in Lost Money Owed to Residents

Oklahoma State Treasury Department is holding $175 MILLION in lost money that is owed to 350,000 residents. Based on current Oklahoma population estimates that means 1 out of every 8 adults are owed unclaimed money!

Oklahoma State Treasury Department is holding $175 MILLION in lost money that is owed to 350,000 residents.  Based on current Oklahoma population estimates that means 1 out of every 8 adults are owed unclaimed money.

In Oklahoma property is considered unclaimed when there is a lack of activity generated by the rightful owner of the property. The OK State Treasury website defines this further by stating, “Evidence of this inactivity includes failure to cash a check, the return of a check or correspondence by the Post Office as undeliverable, or the absence of any communication from the owner.”

If property remains unclaimed for a certain number of years set by statute, it is considered abandoned and must be reported to the state's unclaimed property program.

The largest single unclaimed money account owed to an Oklahoma resident is $573,000

The OK unclaimed funds then site waiting to be found by the rightful owner.  Many Oklahoma citizens are unaware that unclaimed money exists nor are most aware how likely it is they are owed money.  

Based on current Oklahoma population estimates approximately one out of every 7 people in Oklahoma is owed unclaimed money!

In 2006 $12.5 MILLION was returned to rightful owners.  While returning this money is progress it was only a fraction of the total unclaimed money.  $40 MILLION in new unclaimed money turned over to the state in 2006 alone.  

Unclaimed Property in Oklahoma is listed on reports published twice each year in newspapers and is now available via the Internet. Oklahoma residents and others nationwide can search for Unclaimed Property now and after they claim money owed to them should received a check in the mail within 1 to 8 weeks!
