This Key Note market report analyses the market for electrical contracting, a vital aspect of the construction industry. In 2005, the value of the market was £11.34bn, a growth of 4.5% over the previous year.
Electrical contracting covers the installation of fixed electrical wiring and fittings for electrical power, lighting, alarms, security systems and communications equipment. The electrical contracting market is directly linked to the construction industry and for this reason the report discusses the electrical contracting market in the context of major construction market sectors — housing, infrastructure, industrial and commercial work. As far as electrical contracting is concerned there are major opportunities in these sectors, but they have different characteristics. The housing sector has a high volume of relatively simple work, the commercial and industrial sectors have a mixture of higher-power rating and domestic-type work, while the infrastructure sector includes very complex electrical systems, much of which requires specialist knowledge.
Structurally, the electrical contracting market mainly comprises small companies that carry out minor local jobs. The sector also has a relatively small number of large companies, some of which engage in other work such as construction and facilities management, while others specialise in electrical contracting. A major aspect of the electrical contracting sector (along with the rest of the construction industry) is the trend towards large, long-term contracts set up to cover the lifetime of a construction project. Electrical contractors often work within partnership agreements or consortia to take part in these major projects. Private Finance Initiatives (PFIs) form an important part of the work involving electrical contracting.
Electrical contracting will grow in line with the construction industry. If planning permission is given for the Government's housebuilding programme, there will be a large amount of installation work in housing and also other infrastructure and building work related to housebuilding. Prefabricated assembly techniques will continue to be developed, thus driving the need for innovative electrical service requirements for this type of building. Security is now a major concern at national and local level, a situation that provides scope for electrical contractors to expand to include more security systems. The increasing use of computers, data communications and telecommunications will all offer further opportunities for electrical contractors. There is also likely to be heightened demand for electrical controls for monitoring and controlling energy and carbon emissions. The construction industry generally — including the electrical contracting market — is short of skilled labour. This could present a serious challenge to the electrical contracting market in London and the South East due to major projects in the region and the 2012 Olympic Games.
