Henry Rono left his mark on the running world in the late 1970s and early 80s as an athlete, and now looks to leave his mark as a coach. “Coach Henry” has joined the staff of 2L Coaching Services and will be providing training plans, guidance, and motivation to runners online.
The NCAA record books still hold Rono’s name three times, as his 5000m, 3000m, and 3000m steeplechase records remain the fastest times ever run by a collegiate athlete almost three decades after he set them. During a three month span of the spring and summer of 1978, Rono set four world records, a feat that many in the sport consider unmatched by any distance runner.
Online coaching may be a new area for Henry Rono, but this is not his first experience as a coach. He has coached several world class runners, including Ibrahim Hussein, winner of the 1987 NY Marathon and 1988, 1991, and 1992 Boston Marathons. He has obtained USA Track & Field Level I and Level II certifications to improve his scientific knowledge of the sport.
A frequent visitor and contributor to running message boards like letsrun.com, Henry Rono has not been shy about sharing what he knows about the sport with aspiring athletes, both elite and middle-of-the-

There have been other prominent runners who have offered their coaching services online. Jeff Galloway, a former Olympian for the United States, has become famous for his run-walk programs. While Galloway has tried to entice the masses to the sport of running with the easiest, softest approach possible, Henry Rono takes a different stance. He pushes people to achieve the best possible results and does this with a contagious passion.
“We live in the age of online communication and mobile phones and I'm excited to be able to reach many people around the world,” says Rono.
