GPS Antenna – A Thriving Industry in Taiwan

With growing demand coming from mobile, automobile and industrial application markets, GPS antenna industry is thriving in Taiwan.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release)Apr 10, 2007 – Taiwan’s GPS (Global Positioning System) antenna industry is booming and this boom is spurred by the swelling demand from mobile, automobile and industrial application markets.

Last two years (2005-2006) witnessed remarkable growth in the demand for in-car GPS navigation systems, which was driven by a dynamic car industry. Industrial equipments and mobile phones also employ GPS antennas. However, the manufacturers believe that the latter is more challenging owing to the requirement of miniaturized antenna modules.

Most manufacturers in Taiwan produce active & passive antennas. Active antennas refer to the GPS antennas with amplifiers. About 80% of market is made up by this type, whereas the rest is taken up by passive antenna. Most of the antennas made in Taiwan are exported to some other countries, predominantly to Western Europe and North America.

According to Taiwanese antenna makers, transportation and communication in larger areas could be a key driver for the growth of GPS antennas. However stiff price competition is the biggest challenge before them today. Therefore they are now focusing on antenna designs’ complexity and technical know-how, so that they can stay at the forefront of competition.

As per RNCOS report “World Global Positioning Systems Market Forecast (2006-2008)”, “Of all other applications of GPS, INVS (In Vehicle Navigation System) is going to be the most prevalent force driving the growth of Taiwanese GPS industry. In 2004, INVS’ value was US$ 40 Million and it’s estimated to reach US$ 48 Million by the year 2008, representing a CAGR of 4.66%. Fleeting traffic is going to be the 2nd in the growth trend.”
