A recent survey carried out into the popularity and usage of broadband services has shown that the popularity of broadband has continued to soar over the past year, with many countries seeing levels of broadband use shoot up considerably. The survey was carried out by the broadband research company Point Topic, and compared figures from the final quarter of 2005 and the final quarter of 2006 in terms of broadband usage on a global scale.
According to the results of the research broadband usage has soared globally by over thirty percent over the space of a year between the end of 2005 and the end of 2006. The UK came in at seventh on the list of the top ten broadband countries, which in usage order were: USA, China, Japan, Germany, South Korea, France, UK, Italy, Canada, and Spain. The UK saw a rise of over three thousand users between the specified periods, but larger countries such as the USA and China saw rises of over ten thousand and over fourteen thousand users respectively. The highest growth rate amongst countries from the top ten table was seen in France, which enjoyed growth of over forty percent.
The increased number of service providers coupled with better value deals on offer from existing providers may have contributed to the rising popularity of this service. Even countries that are not on the top ten usage list have seen massive rises in terms of popularity and usage, with India seeing a jump of over one hundred and fifty percent, and Turkey seeing a rise of nearly ninety percent.
The survey also revealed that the most popular method of accessing broadband services was via DSL, which is used by over sixty five percent of broadband users globally. Satellite, on the other hand, accounts for less than one percent of users worldwide.
