Contrary to the popular misconception, cowboy Bob Kinford does not play the guitar or ride off into the sunset. After more than 30 years in the saddle he has learned at least 2 things. First, packing a guitar while chousing cattle out of brush and timber will ruin your guitar. Second, cowboys ride off into the sunrise, and, if they are lucky, will be riding back home out of the sunset.
Kinford blames the romanticized image of the cowboy on New York editors. "They just couldn't understand what the cowboys were writing about and switched the words to make them more apealing to city folk. Take "Home On the Range" for example. They didn't realize that the cowboys didn't get to eat beef, because that would be eating the profits. But they could eat anything else they could shoot. That is why the original line was not "where the deer and antelope play", but was "Where theres deer and antelope stew."
With two books to his credit, Kinford has just released his first CD, appropriately titled "I Wish Mama Woulda Listened To Willy" referring of course to the old Waylon and Willie song "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys." One would think recollections of being hit by lightning or being dragged across the desert underneath a mule he was supposed to be riding would be tragic, but they are not. Instead they will bring tears from laughing so hard your sides hurt. Besides, how can one not see the humor in (someone else) having their arm stuck in a heifer's mouth when she comes out of anesthesia?
Caution: Do not listen to this CD while driving, operating machinery or performing open heart surgery. Excessive laughter may cause injury or death due to involuntary loss of coordination and/or bodily control.
