Dili - April 5, 2007 -There was an outpouring of warmth and support last night in Dili, as Prime Minister Dr José Ramos-Horta led his final rally in his campaign for president, accompanied by outgoing President Xanana Gusmao. Among thousands of loyal supporters, Ramos-Horta looks to lead the race, with rally attendances far higher than opposing candidates, according to independent bodies.
“There is no way to clearly count rally participants, we do not count solicited attendance, but the figures we have show Ramos-Horta in the lead,” stated an unnamed UN source.
For over two decades José Ramos-Horta and Xanana Gusmao have championed the democratic rights of the East Timorese. Firstly for independence of the nation, and then again against a corrupt and volatile majority opposition Fretilin Government, whose disgraced Prime Minister, Mari Alkitiri, was forced to resign after his failure in governance led to widespread violence in 2006.
A leading member of the Fretilin reform group, Mr. Vincente Ximenes, stated, “Fretilin has disgraced our nation. This election is our second vote for freedom. The first was for freedom of independence as a nation, the second for freedom from a poisonous government regime. April 9 marks the end of the violence, the poverty, the fighting, the blame! On April 9, we as a people will begin our walk of freedom!”
Last night was an overwhelming victory for José Ramos-Horta, demonstrating the mass support of the people, in addition to widespread and universal support from global world leaders. He enters the final stages of his campaign as he began, with dignity and integrity.
Ends.
