________
DILI - April 4, 2007 - Dr. José Ramos-Horta today called for Friday 6 April 2007 (Good Friday) to be a day of healing for the nation of East Timor ahead of the presidential elections, being held on Monday April 9, 2007.
Dr. José Ramos-Horta is running as an independent candidate in the election, not on a single party platform, but representing all people of East Timor.
“Today I call on all citizens of Timor L’este to spend this Good Friday, our most holy day, focusing on reflection, not the election. While the elections are vital to the future of our country, more importantly we need to unite, put the past behind us and strive for peace and a secure foundation for future generations.
“Our country has suffered enough from years of occupation and political unrest, now is the time for the people to come together in peace and unified demand for a better future.”
“Regardless of what happens in the polls on Monday, our country is at a turning point in its troubled history and we need to focus on what we can achieve by working together. We must not let politics divide our nation, but rather look at our common goals and drive for peace and stability. Only then will we achieve our rightful place as a prosperous nation in the international community.”
“May God bless you, and God bless our nation.”
Ramos-Horta has dedicated his life to Timor, tirelessly generating worldwide support for the cause of an independent Timor-Leste. As president, Ramos-Horta will devote his energies to bringing peace and prosperity, strengthening one of the world’s newest countries.
