DILI - 27/03/07 - The Prime Minister of East Timor, Dr. José Ramos-Horta has stepped aside from duties as Prime Minister to begin his campaign for the office of President of East Timor, with elections to be held on April 9, 2007.

Dr. Ramos-Horta will run as an independent candidate, not on a single party platform, but representing all people of East Timor.

“I do not believe in the two-party system,” stated Ramos-Horta. “I believe that even in a small country like East Timor, a greater plurality is necessary. Even the smallest parties, and every individual, should feel that they are represented by the system, that they have a voice in the parliament”

Dr. Ramos-Horta has dedicated his life to East Timor, tirelessly generating world-wide support for the cause of an independent nation. As president, Horta will devote his energies to bringing peace and prosperity, strengthening one of the world’s newest countries.

When asked about the current violence and specifically that of rebel leader Mr. Reinado, Dr. Ramos-Horta noted, “He is not a product of a country divided, but a product of a man divided. He is passionate and has ideas, and that, in itself is not criminal”

“I want to lead an East Timor where there are no ‘rebel’ leaders-just leaders-Men and Women who support a peaceful, democratic East Timor and celebrate the freedoms of democracy-free speech and open forum debate-conditions for peace and prosperity.”

“This can only happen when all East Timorese have a voice and can be heard by their Government. For our young country, this is the way forward and I am running for president to ensure we fulfil our destiny.”

José Ramos-Horta, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, studied Public International Law at The Hague Academy of International Law and at Antioch University where he completed a Master of Arts degree in Peace Studies. He was trained in Human Rights Law at the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg. He was considered a candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as United Nations Secretary-General but returned to East Timor to serve as Prime Minister. Dr. Ramos Horta continues his work to consolidate a peaceful democracy in East Timor.

Ends.
