Richmond, VA, March 26, 2007 - OriginsUSA, Inc. calls on the Texas State Legislature to defeat SB 1567, captioned '"Relating to the creation of the adoption incentive program." The law mandates a $500.00 payment to any Texas woman who opts to surrender her newborn for adoption rather than having an abortion. This proposed bill is exploitative because it would pay women to function as incubators and commodify babies.
It is unethical for the state to offer incentives for a woman to surrender a child for adoption, considering the lifelong effects that have been shown to exist for the surrendering mother and the surrendered child, which include but are not limited to disenfranchised grief, trauma, dissociation, and problems with identity, trust and self-esteem.
This bill puts a dollar value on human life and is clearly baby-selling, coercive and is in violation of the laws already in place in Texas. This bill is an affront to the women of Texas and to their unborn children. We urge you to soundly defeat this bill.
