D.C. Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Honors Community Groups in the Fight Against Breast Cancer at Annual Finer Womanhood Public Program

As part of their mission to enhance the quality of life in the District of Columbia through community service and sisterhood during the organization’s observance of Finer Womanhood, the Beta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. will host a community health awareness program to promote the importance of women’s health focusing on women of color and low-income residents.

The theme of this year’s event is “Building Better Bodies and Communities” and the focus of the public program is breast cancer awareness, honoring local organizations for their outreach in educating the public on prevention methods and community health resources that are available. The honorees include W*USA 9 Buddy Check 9 program which encourages women to pick a buddy and remind each other on the 9th of the month to do a self exam. Participants also include representatives from the American Cancer Society, Doctors Community Hospital and Project Now.

Finer Womanhood is a hallmark of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. that begun in 1923 and the activities emphasize the standards, morals, customs, and attributes of its members and the community. This observance was originally held the last full week of February, and later expanded to also include the entire month of March.  Finer Womanhood is defined as “the distinguishing characteristics of a woman - one superior in kind, quality or appearance, marked by or affecting elegance or refinement.”

Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1920 in Washington, DC on the belief that the social nature of sorority life should not overshadow the real mission of progressive organizations- to address societal mores, ill, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day. The international organization’s more than 100,000 initiated members have given millions of voluntary hours to educate the public, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change. Zeta Phi Beta has more than 800 chapters in the United States, Japan, Germany, the Republic of Korea, and the Caribbean.
