The women of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Omicron Phi Zeta chapter, will honor Marine Captain Vernice Armour at their annual Finer Womanhood program. This year's theme is, "Pioneering African American Women: Telling Herstory."
The event will take place on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at 3:00 pm at Church of the Redeemer Presbyterian, 1423 Girard St. NE, Washington, DC.
Captain Armour, Omicron Phi Zeta's 2007 Community Pearl, will be the keynote speaker. The Community Pearl award is presented to outstanding women who provide distinguished service to communities throughout metropolitan Washington DC
In her commitment to her community, Captain Armour is a noted speaker to youth groups, particularly young girls, inspiring them to reach for the stars, and by her own accomplishments, teaching them that only the sky is the limit to reaching their goals.
Captain Armour in a number of firsts: the first African American female combat pilot in the United States; the first African American female Marine Corps aviator; and the first African American female pilot to fly over Iraq. She was inducted into the National African American Military Museum's Hall of Fame in 2004. Among her many awards and recognitions are: the Naval Air Station's prestigious Commodore's List; the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; the Marine Corps Commendation Medal; the National Defense Service Medal; and the Academic Achievement Award.
