The Sacramento Bee selected the Halogen solution after evaluating three vendors and the possibility of producing their own employee performance and talent management system internally. Following the assessment, it was determined an internal solution would lack many of the important features desired by the selection committee. Of the vendors evaluated, Halogen was selected on the basis of its reputation, its award-winning solution and excellent customer testimonials including one from Lee Enterprises, another respected media organization.

The Sacramento Bee is in the implementation stage with the new solution, but managers are looking forward to leaving behind the old labor-intensive system that required shifting of paper around the organization for various sign-offs. With the old system it was difficult to track the status of appraisals and hold managers accountable. Tyson noted that many appraisals were completed late, which has a negative impact on employee retention.
“Part of our selection process was calculating our anticipated ROI resulting from the new solution,” said Tyson. “We expect to recover all of the costs associated with the solution in just over a year due to the time savings alone. The solution will not just benefit HR; it will help all of our managers tremendously.”
