using a complex simulation program and thus provide a basis for a new computing platform.
The theoretical model is composed of many biophysical neuronal cells, connected in a network. These cells perform
computations in parallel and are capable of integrating information from many sensory systems. The number of neurons
estimated to be in the brain is in the number of 100 billions. To date we have managed to simulate a network of less than a
1000 neurons only, using custom cell models. Building better software tools that can scale to the brain size is one of the
company's top priorities.
"While there is an abundance of models in the neural networks field most of them do not share biophysical properties with the
actual neuronal cells and thus most of the systems that employ that technology, fail to achieve the full capabilities of a
brain system. In computational neuroscience models make use of neurons with biophysical properties but they lack knowledge
representation.
Our theoretic model bridges this gap and as a result provides a substantially better computing model compared to many systems
and also with the existing computer architecture. Not only in features like speed but also in features like learning and
cognition. Our preliminary findings indicate that these and other brain functions are within our reach.
In a larger context this is in line with recent efforts from the past two decades, to come up with a different computing
platform that will replace the existing one, which is built on top of the classical computer. Actual computers are inadequate
in helping us solve complex real life problems, like simulating all the brain functions. Intelligence Realm hopes that
someday soon, it will be able to solve problems like this and thus remove the fiction from science fiction.
Each one of the other emerging computing platforms has advantages and disadvantages, yet fully understanding how the brain
works would be a great achievement for all of us that could pave the way for technologies that we can only imagine now." said
Ovidiu Anghelidi, one of the company founders.
The company will continue to focus on the computational aspect of the brain only.
Intelligence Realm would also like to caution against expecting a quick time frame for a large scale system implementation.
The estimate is that another 10 years will pass until the company would have a system that exhibits features like learning
and cognition integrated into a single platform.
