The 2007 Six Nations tournament gets underway in February with France looking to defend their crown.

Feb. 1, 2007 - PRLog -- France joined the competition in 1910 expanding the competition to five countries and more recently Italy were admitted in 2000 to complete the current list of entrants.

On top of the winning the Six Nations outright, there are a series of minor accolades that can be won over the course of the competition. Teams winning all of their matches also collect the Grand Slam alongside the Six Nations trophy. Over the course of the 105 tournaments, 33 have been won by teams doing the Grand Slam. Wales are the most recent recipients of this having won a perfect five out of five in 2005.

The Triple Crown is awarded to any of the home nations which wins all three encounters against the other teams from the United Kingdom. Any home nation winning the Grand Slam automatically qualifies for the Triple Crown too. Ireland beat all their fellow home nations last year to claim the title and you have to go back to 2001 since the Triple Crown was last not achieved.

The winners of the game between England and Scotland are awarded the Calcutta Cup, which has been competed for annually since 1880. Scotland currently hold the famous old trophy having defeated England 18-12 at Murrayfield last year.
The only Six Nations honour that teams try to avoid is the Wooden Spoon, awarded to the side that finished with the worst record in the competition. Italy have won this dubious prize in five of the seven years since they joined the Six Nations tournament.

Six Nations Odds

Ireland are the favourites with our betting partners ahead of the 2007 tournament, having just missed out on points difference to their French counterparts last year. The Irish will start their schedule in Wales and are around 6/4 to win outright. Current holders France start at around 2/1 with our betting partners to win back-to-back titles for the first time since 1998.

Wales and England sit just behind the market leaders around 4/1 and 5/1, while the outsiders are Scotland (around 25/1) and Italy (150/1).
