March With the Poets January 27 As We Call on Congress to End the War Now!

On November 7, 2006, the American people sent a powerful message to Washington: We want an end to the war in Iraq. Follow-up polls have confirmed it: Over 70% of Americans disapprove of the handling of the war. And yet, the president speaks of escalating the war – and some Democrats agree: They want to send more troops to Iraq!
This January, you can join with poets from all over the country in marching for an immediate end to the war in Iraq. United for Peace & Justice – an umbrella group of hundreds of local and national peace and justice organizations, including Poets Against War – is organizing a massive mobilization in Washington, January 27, 2007. D.C. Poets Against the War will once again be putting together a delegation of poets and we invite you to join us.
At the last national mobilization, September 24, 2005, we carried signs with the words of poets through the streets of D.C., a very powerful and welcome break from the endless sea of END THE WAR NOW signs. We’ll again have poetry signs you can carry – or make your own: Just write your favorite lines of peace poetry on a sign and bring it to Washington. The photos here are from that event. We’re also planning a poetry open mic that weekend – an opportunity to join your voice with others as we call on Congress to end the carnage and bring the troops home now.
