Betting Update; Wigan v Chelsea with the bookmakers making the Chelsea their 21/50 favourites

After last weekends dramatic title race turnaround the gap between the top two no only stands at two points after at one stage looking like a massive eight gap in favour of the Red Devils.

PRLog (Press Release) - Dec 22, 2006 -
So with Chelsea now back in range and with the busy Christmas period on the horizon don’t be surprised to see Chelsea kick on with the table having a totally different look by the time everyone’s back to work in January.

First up for Mourhino’s side is a long away trip this Saturday to play Wigan at the JJB, but with the Chelsea camp sure to still be buzzing and the fact Wigan have lost their last three home games, without finding the net, then nothing short of three points for The Blues is expected.

In the match odds Chelsea can be backed around the 4/9 mark, and for a game that does have a one-sided feel to it that is sure to tempt in the big players, while others are bound to add them into weekend doubles and trebles in order to try to recoup back some festive expenses.

Not many head-to-heads to go on between the sides, with the teams only meeting six times in all. Last season was the first time since 1985 that they played with Chelsea winning both fixtures 1-0. However it was a late late goal in this fixture that sealed the win for The Blues, so don’t expect them to get it all their way. A repeat of that 1-0 to Chelsea does look tempting at 6/1 while I’d also be tempted to back 2-0 at 11/2 just to act as a cover – after all they have won a total of 13 games by one of those two scorelines in all competitions so far this season.

Wigan’s second season in the big time started well, but with a few injuries they have slipped up in recent weeks, losing their last three homes games without scoring. Two of those games were however against Arsenal and Liverpool, but with the most recent against Sheff Utd the odds of around 6/1 for them to land all three points against the champions might look skinny.

One market that did stand out at a fairly decent price was in the half-time/full-time betting. Last season Wigan did well in both fixtures and were holding the champions after 45mins, but then went on to lose the game, after probably just running out of steam. At 7/2 for a draw at half-time and then Chelsea to prevail looks cracking value.

Chelsea don’t go many goals without scoring and as long as John Terry is back in defence after missing their last few matches then it will be hard for Wigan to break their three game home goal drought. Drogba and Lampard can’t do any wrong at the moment and although they are not the most imaginative of selections for Drogba to score at around 6/5 and Lampard first goal at around 6/1 should give you a great run for your money and with a bit of luck help pay for the turkey.

Recommended Bets - 2pts – Half-time Draw/ Full-time Chelsea
Recommended Bets - 2pts – Drogba to score
Recommended Bets - 1pt - Lampard to score first
Recommended Bets - 1pt each - Chelsea 1-0 & 2-0
