The secret war time post office at Bletchley Park, England will be honouring Britain’s “Fab Four” on 9th January 2007. It will release an exclusive limited edition first day cover for Royal Mail’s “The Beatles” stamp issue. Just 500 of these unique collectables are to be issued.
Bletchley Park artist George Thompson has designed both the cover and the postmark cancelling the stamps. These first day covers are only available from Bletchley Park Post Office at the pre issue price of £12.50 GBP ($22 US). They can be previewed at www.bletchleycovers.com or more information can be requested from Bletchley Park Post Office, The Mansion, Bletchley Park, Milton Keynes, MK3 6EB, UK.
During World War 2 Bletchley Park Post Office was an undercover mailroom with secret addresses such as PO Box 111, Bletchley. This was to ensure that this vital Allied code breaking HQ was kept a closely guarded secret. When the war ended Bletchley Park became a Post Office training centre and the tiny sub post office opened in 1947. Since 1994 it has been publishing first day covers to help preserve Bletchley Park as a communications technology museum. Early editions have already become quite valuable fetching up to 50 times the issue price at auction. The Beatles cover should be no exception as advance orders are already higher than normally expected.
