Challenges to US peacemaking

Richard Armitage keynote speech on conflict resolution opportunities and challenges

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Dateline: Singapore,

Richard Armitage on challenges to US peacemaking

Mr Richard Armitage, President of Armitage International and former United States Deputy Secretary of State, will present a keynote speech on conflict resolution opportunities and challenges facing the United States of America at the Sentosa Golf Club, Singapore on Monday, 27 November.

Mr Armitage will discuss, with diplomats in Singapore and peacemakers from the region, the contribution of the United States to the resolution of armed conflicts around the world with a particularly focus on Asia.

The keynote speech, entitled 'Does the US have the credibility to resolve, and mediate conflict?' will be the opening event for the 2006 Retreat of Senior Conflict Mediators co-hosted by the Geneva-based Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD Centre) and the Singapore-based Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS).

"Asia has become an invaluable source of peacemaking experience and lessons.

"The current climate of terror has clouded global vision on the peaceful resolution of armed conflict, and the implications for future action must be very carefully considered.

"People attending this Retreat have an important contribution to make.

"I hope that through my speech and our discussions on 27 November we can help shape that debate."
said Armitage

The Singapore Mediators Retreat 2006, is a closed meeting. Attendance is by invitation only. The meeting brings together senior conflict mediators to share experiences and discuss dilemmas and best practices emerging from their attempts to facilitate the peaceful resolution of armed conflicts.
